How to make Carrot Toppers using Gum Paste

Creating charming carrot toppers for your baked goods is a fun and rewarding process that adds a touch of creativity to your decorating skills. Follow these simple steps to make your own vibrant gum paste carrot toppers.

Materials

  • 1 batch Gum Paste
  • Tylose Glue Instructions how to make Tylose Glue can be found on the Gum Paste page
  • Food Colouring Orange
  • Food Colouring Dark Green

Instructions

  • Add orange powdered food colouring to a large ball of gum paste and knead using clean hands and a clean surface.
  • Add dark green powdered food colouring to a small ball of gum paste and knead using clean hands and a clean surface.

Shape the Carrot

  • Weigh 8 grams of orange gum paste and shape it into a cone.
  • Using a ball tool, make a hole at the top of the carrot.
  • Cut grooves into the carrot using a knife.

  • Dust the carrot with powdered food colouring using a small sponge cut from a scourer.

Create Carrot Tops

  • Carrot No. 1: Roll out the green gum paste using a fondant rolling pin and use a daisy cutter to cut the shape for the top of the carrot. Gently pull the petals to make them slightly longer. Attach using a small amount of tylose glue.

  • Carrot No. 2: Rub some dark green powdered food coloring over the rolled-out surface. Use rounded nail scissors to cut the gum paste to resemble grass. Apply tylose glue to the back of the straight edge, then roll and squeeze it together so it can be inserted into the hole of the carrot.
  • Carrot No. 3: Roll 5 small cylindrical-shaped pieces of gum paste.
  • Fold them in half and squeeze 3 together and 2 together at the fold.

  • Place the 2 on top of the 3 and squeeze again so that it can be inserted into the hole of the carrot with tylose glue.

  • Carrot No. 4: Use parsley for a natural and fresh look.
  • Carrot No. 5: Use dill for a delicate and fine texture
  • Carrot No. 6: Use rosemary for a unique and aromatic touch.

Important Note: These gum paste carrots can be a choking hazard for small children. Please ensure they are not given to children under 3 years old or left unattended.
